What does it mean to consider a belief sacred or alternatively taboo? Why is it necessary for an idea to be immutable in the first place? We humans can be incredibly stubborn when we feel that our values are being threatened—or even questioned. Even in light of overwhelming evidence and rationale in opposition of our belief, we tend to double-down and flaunt the belief as a call to battle. We see this happening today in the U.S. as the frequently alternating ruling parties instantiate their majority beliefs into regulations and statutes while hastily attempting to undo those established by the previous ruling party. It seriously limits social progress. Moreover, it’s the larger citizenry that suffers from such behaviors, and as the government becomes more unhinged, so do its people.
